The pay rate is finally on par with private companies as of Jan 2020 COLA. I've thoroughly enjoyed 12 years of employment with DoD. The company has TSP matching on contributions up to 5%, paid holidays, abundance in Sick and Annual leave accrued per pay period. I have 30 more years to go and I am very certain I will retire in my department. Just as any other company, tough to start in the beginning, but as you climb up the pay rate the better it gets.
Pros
TSP 401k matching, Annual/sick leave (PTO), ad hoc/teleworking schedule or compressed schedule available
Cons
None as of today.

I enjoyed working there but when the contract ends, the job ends. I worked for 3 different contractors during my time with the DoD. Each time the contractor ended, I would have to reapply and start benefits over.

Very good work/life balance. Payband is different then typical GS and raises are based on performance. Leadership encourages training and development of employees.

Excellent work experience. Enjoyed the rigors of working, as a civilian, on a secure military base. Only drawbacks were the excessive commute and the position was out of my regular field of expertise. Thus, a reduced salary and sizeable learning curve were challenging to overcome but were realized. A new position, in my field of expertise presented itself with a much higher salary.

It was a very diverse and ever changing environment. Would have loved to stay in service if I was single. You work a whole lot and get great benefits, but pay isn't what it should be.

The DoD is always an interesting organization to work for. The work can be challenging at times, but the opportunity for intrinsic rewards are abundant. Sure, there is more money to be made in the private sector, but the level of financial compensation is fair.
Pros
Autonomy
Cons
Opportunities for advancement

Youll spend half of your time doing nothing related to your job and youll work wildly different hours as a mechanic. Expect lots of time away from family and little to no time to yourself. Some of the perks is good benefits and decent pay. The military will provide you almost anything you need.

Some managers were good yet left the organization and/or plan on it. This is due to mirco-managing from their boss. Morale has slowly lowered due to this problem, which is not good to Keep Them Fit To Fight. DoD is great as far as benefits and job security. Just wish morale could improve though it varies from agencies.
Pros
Job Security/Good Benefits
Cons
30 min lunchs/ lack of morale/ micro-management

Fair pay, Strong feelings of been valued and rewarded. Proud to be a member of a time honored corps.

You will find bumps in the road no matter what your jobs is.
As long as you get respect and valued in pay and esteem then it will be a road worth traveling. This is definitely one.
