Hard work but fair and well paid

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
No hospitality company is perfect. Work life balance will always be tough but people are generally appreciated.Opportunities to progress are good at each level.Contracts should be lowered to 40 hours rather than 48.

Pros

Holidays are good, Most area managers supportive and encouraging, Good 2 way communication to directors

Cons

48 hour contract, Often work over contracted hours, Tight labour targets but this is a hospitality wide problem

Low pay !

Although there are opportunities to move forward within whitbread the starting salary working in there hotels is barely enough to live on. They offer no London weighting and you are expected to work bank holidays and no extra salary apart from Xmas day

Pros

Discounts on hotel rooms

Cons

Poor wages

Shambolic, like the blind leading the blind! Premier Inn kendal central

As a company whitbread are actually OK, management however are abysmal and an embarrassment to the company, clueless with no work ethic, strategy or structure and are always willing to pass the buck. I would strongly advise against anyone seeking employment with this company!

Pros

Team members a great bunch but constantly down trodden.

Cons

Management always willing to cut corners with little regard for guests and employees.

Do not work under this management, hence all the job openings.

A good company to work for all in all, this establishment has gone from one of the best places to eat in town to the worse. A lot of this come down to poor management of staff, overworked and understaffed

Pros

The team

Cons

Manager

No work life balance

Contracted working hours are 48 but that means you have to be in the restaurant floor 48 hours p/w - no real time allocated for the multitude of admin tasks necessary

Pros

Fair salary, decent bonus scheme

Cons

Long long hours

Awful

Horrible place to work. Make you stay on and make you feel bad if you leave on time. Belittled and micromanaged. Pay isn’t worth it. Chefs shout at you, customers shout at you, top manager shouts and swears at you. Overall not a nice place to work

Pros

Keep your own tips (if not stolen by other team members)

Cons

Stress, long hours, poor management

Not recommended

Regularly sent home early, eventually they let me go citing lack of work available and I wasn't given much notice of this. I wouldn't recommend this company.

Is Indeed your favorite place to learn about companies?

Don't bother

unless you really want to work long hours, not good pay,no help during COVID,no help if ill no management system in place, didn't believe in COVID till it happens, it might take years before you go up the ladder in promotion, unless you are a very good friend of management you might get a pub all to yourself and run it how you like.

Pros

free breakfast, free uniform

Cons

long hours, no respect, bad pay, aggro from staff

A once great company that's lost it's way and doesn't care.

A mushroom factory, you'll be kept in the dark, fed manure and expected to grow. Whitbread PLC try really hard to be a quality restaurant yet miss the mark by a miles. The only fresh ingredients used are the steaks which is the only item on the menu that isn't frozen. The menus both drinks and food is created by people who have never set foot in a kitchen or on the floor and it really shows. The training videos are truly terrible looking like a knock off pepper pig cartoon containing incorrect information but it's ok because they can be completed by clicking random multiple choice answers and you'll still pass.

Pros

A Discount Card

Cons

Terrible pay, Laughable training

Micromanagement at its finest, staff are over worked and underpaid. Very repetitive and unmotivating environment.

If you don't enjoy someone over your shoulder every minute then its not the job for you. Constant calls with a lack of staff, angry customers due to poor management.

Pros

Progression if your a favourite

Cons

Repetitive, micromanagement, low pay, under staffed.

Productive and fun workplace, the staff was fine and friendly.

It depends on management sometimes, if the manager is selfish, do not wait that he or she will recognise your workload that had been done. This was management point of view, if the staff would receive the recognition than they would not do anymore the job properly.

Pros

Discount Employee

Cons

No recognition

It was ok

I enjoyed my time working for Costa, but most of that is due to the team I was working with, upper management have NO IDEA what actually works in store compared to what the Head Office want to push you to do

Pros

50% on shift (most managers let you have it free though), can take waste home, lots of training

Cons

Shifts not really flexible, stupid targets set by HO or changed they DON’T work in reality

Work life balance? Forget it

As a kitchen manager your contract is 48 hours, you will be required to work whatever is needed. In the five years I worked for whitbread I worked 48 hours in a week once. 60/70 hour weeks are normal in the kitchen and you won’t be paid for overtime. No thanks will be given as they expect you to work the extra hours. In terms of benefits/bonus you won’t get any! A small discount on hotel rooms and 50% off one meal a day when your working. That’s about it. Do yourself a favour and look for a job elsewhere.

Pros

You’ll have to work Christmas Day

Cons

Too many

Good people and always laughing

You would always find something to be laughing about, and once you get the hang of everything, it all goes smoothly. You get help whenever it's needed.

Pros

They teach you well so you know what you're doing

Cons

No smoking breaks most places or free food

Lovely team but too many negatives

I worked in one of whitbreads restaurants. They were really good at making sure you were well trained and knowledgeable. They had a variety of benefits like great deals off of premier inn rooms and 25% off food when you eat in the restaurant. However, the pay isn’t great especially if you are under 25 as you will get paid according to your age not experience or duties. Shifts are very all over the place and they will not stick to your contracted hours and will sometimes put schedule you for loads of short shifts rather than a few longer ones. But if you get a longer one it can be up to 12.5 hours with only a 30 minute break

Pros

Good discounts, cheap on shift meals, nice team

Cons

Irregular shift patterns, unfair payment

Terrible management

Favouritism is rife within this company as is gossiping. Management are spiteful and turn up as and when they feel like it. If you like a bad atmosphere this is the work place for you

Pros

Doesn't require much effort

Cons

Unhealthy working environment, poor management

More staff leave than join

Poorly managed… no enthusiasm in management that passes on to the team. People dread coming in and are down and depressed as soon as they arrive. They rely on the bonds you build with other team members in the hope that if it’s busy you will stay on to helpYour friends. When it comes to pay you have to check every hour worked as they are happy to cut a few here and there and dock you for breaks you don’t take. This is worse when you stay on and give up your time and they dock you more break times for doing so.I would not recommend this to anyone not even those I dislike. Avoid at all costs.

Pros

It’s a job

Cons

Everything

okey very good

This giant company in all different fields and the distinguished staff from all over the world. I have never seen this distinction before. I have gained many administrative and technical skills from it. Thanks

Pros

Collaboration is like a home at work

Cons

Minor errors in daily performance
